Day Two

Our second full day included John McCollum and his family, who arrived Tuesday night. Sarabeth, Jamie and I started the day off early walking around the neighborhood and visiting the local vendors. We all traveled together to get breakfast: pho nuddles and cafe de leche (so good). We explored another neighborhood in Phnom Penh around what is called the Russian market. It is a giant indoor market reminiscent of a flea market. We found some gifts for family back home and enjoyed exploring the labyrinth.

In search of smoothies we went to a local cafe that helps to provide young women with job skills (www.yijj.com). Next door was a fare trade store that employs local women who create clothing, bags and banners (www.rajanacrafts.org).

Our afternoon was spent at Prek Eng 2 playing with the kids. We had more fresh coconuts to drink, which was great on another hot day. We brought a new soccer ball and played an endless game in the courtyard. Some of the younger girls entertained us with a traditional Khmer song and dance routine.

We spent time telling the kids about our families and connecting with them. Still working to learn more of their names. We stayed until dinner time for the kids and welcomed back middle school students who had taken exams today.

  1. Hi! I'm Marla. My husband and I are friends of John and Kori's and visited Cambodia last summer (our kiddos are at Prek Eng 3). I'm excited to follow along on with your blog as we prepare to return to Cambodia in December.

We went to the Yellow Cafe and Rajana Fair Trade shop while we were there too. :)
